Baby Blog: The Snoo saved us

The first week of having a baby was one of the best weeks of my life, but also one of the most stressful! Lack of sleep is hard on anyone, let alone the parent of a newborn. Here’s how the Snoo saved our sleep. P.S. This page may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information.

First, what is the Snoo?

It’s a smart bassinet created by Dr. Harvey Karp. He’s also the author of The Happiest Baby on the Block. As his site writes, “Dr. Karp’s breakthrough discoveries—the calming reflex, the 5 S’s, and Toddler-ese—have benefited millions of parents and are taught by thousands of specially trained educators in over 20 nations.”

What it does is react to your baby’s needs.

If your baby is crying, the Snoo automatically reacts to the child and uses motion and sound to rock the child to sleep. According to the site, “Most Snoo babies sleep 9 hours or more by 2-3 months!”

Although my baby was mostly calm, he wasn’t sleeping well initially. A friend loaned me her Snoo when my baby was a few days old, and the rest is history. My baby started sleeping in three to four-hour stretches, closely followed by five to seven hours by two months old. Not every night is perfect, but we noticed a difference with it.

You can rent or buy the Snoo. It also has an app so you can control it from another room as well if you want to raise or lower the levels of speed and sound manually. You can also lock it on a level. We locked ours on the slowest level when he was a newborn.

Keep in mind if your baby cries for an extended period of time and the Snoo isn’t working, they likely need a feeding or to be changed. My main complaint about it is my baby’s arms get free from the swaddle and he wakes himself up. So if you master that, let me know your secret!

Each child is different, so definitely do your research before making a decision. But I can say the Snoo made things much more manageable for us.
