How to use a portable green screen at home

A portable green screen is a great way to make your very own at-home studio. You can film yourself in front of it and then edit out the background in Premiere. Here’s what you need to know. P.S. This page may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information.

Buy one

First, pick one that’s easy for you to store and use. This one on Amazon is lightweight and foldable.

Next, set it up in a place with plenty of space. Remember, you’ll not only need space for the screen but for the camera too. Position the camera so that it only captures the green screen and nothing else outside of it.

Think about audio as well. You may get an echo if you’re in a space that has high ceilings or not a lot of furniture. Try opening a window if it’s not too loud outside. Or add curtains and rugs to the space to help reduce the echo off the walls.

edit out the background

Import your footage after you finish filming. Editing out the background is surprisingly simple in Premiere.

Drag the footage onto your timeline. Then go to: Effects > Video Effects > Keying > Ultra Key

Drag the Ultra Key effect onto the video. You can see the effect under the Effects Control panel and edit its settings there. Choose Key Color and use the ink icon to match the green of the screen in your video.

The green screen will then disappear. Use the Matte Generation tool to clean up shadows and lighting.

You can then add layers under the video to add any background you want!

The main things to remember are to shoot your video with a clean screen and good lighting. This will help Premiere erase it effectively.
