As a journalist working in AI, I’m very interested in how newsrooms are increasingly turning to AI tools to streamline research and organize information. Google’s NotebookLM is one such tool — but what exactly can it do, and how safe is it to use with sensitive material?

What NotebookLM Can Do

NotebookLM is an AI-powered note-taking tool designed to help users engage with their research more interactively. By uploading files — including PDFs, Google Docs, transcripts and even YouTube videos — journalists can ask the model to summarize, analyze, compare or extract details from these sources.

I was most impressed with their Audio Overview tool which basically creates what I’ve heard some call a type of “podcast” personalized to the material you’ve uploaded. You can actually listen to your work analyzed and discussed in what sounds like an episode of a show.

There’s also a Deep Dive tool which lets you interact with the so-called podcast, so you can jump in and ask questions or contribute to the conversation with two other “hosts” speaking to you.

Here’s an overview of how NotebookLM’s tools can be helpful to journalists:

• Summarization & Source-Based Q&A
  Journalists can upload long documents and receive concise summaries or answers to specific questions. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, NotebookLM pulls directly from the documents you’ve uploaded, making it a more controlled environment for research.
• Outlining Support
  The tool can suggest article structures or relevant angles based on your notes, which is helpful when organizing complex stories or pinpointing a clear narrative.
• Compare and Contrast
  For investigative work involving multiple viewpoints or opposing sources, NotebookLM can help identify differences or commonalities across materials.
• Audio Overviews & Conversations
  Audio Overviews allows users to listen to AI-generated summaries in a podcast-style format. Even more interesting is the addition of interactive audio, where you can ask questions verbally and receive spoken responses. This is particularly helpful for journalists who need to engage with their notes while multitasking.

There is also an option to share your projects (called “Notebooks”) with other Google users, similar to sharing a Google Doc.

Privacy and Security

Using AI tools like NotebookLM raises critical privacy and security concerns — especially for journalists dealing with sensitive information or confidential sources.

According to Google, NotebookLM does not use your uploaded documents to train its AI models. Your data remains exclusive to your account and isn’t employed to enhance the system for other users.

I always encourage people to read up on the privacy policies themselves and to make sure their account settings are appropriately set up.

Despite any assurances made by Google, it’s important to be cautious. Here are some potential limitations:

• Confidentiality
  Even with privacy measures, uploading highly sensitive information to any online platform carries inherent risks. Consider the sensitivity of your data before using NotebookLM.
• Browser-Only Access
  As of early 2025, NotebookLM is only available via browser. There’s no mobile app, which could be a limitation for journalists who prefer on-the-go workflows.
• Notebook Size Limitations
  Users are capped on how much data they can upload to each notebook, which could be a problem for those dealing with large volumes of research.
• Language Limitations
  NotebookLM is optimized for English text. Using it for sources in other languages may produce less reliable results as of 2025.

Final Thoughts

NotebookLM offers interesting possibilities for journalists who need to make sense of large volumes of information quickly. Its ability to create summaries, compare sources and even provide audio-based feedback can be incredibly useful.

But before using it make sure to fully understand Google’s privacy policies, consider alternative tools for high-risk data and keep in mind the platform’s limitations when deciding if NotebookLM is right for your workflow.
