In the era of rapidly advancing technology, the question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) can replace certain professions looms large. I’ve been taking a course on Midjourney and ChatGPT, and while I enjoy learning and using AI, my mind has been drawn to a question I’ve received a few times this year. As a working journalist who also teaches journalism, I’ve been asked: Can artificial intelligence replace journalists?

Here’s why good journalism and the power of storytelling cannot be replaced by anything other than humans:

Interviews

Getting to the heart of a story involves interviewing. Quality, in-person interviews cannot be done by machines. A journalist’s ability to engage, empathize and extract nuanced perspectives from others offers insights no algorithm can predict or replicate.

Reporting

Being on the ground, witnessing and recording events firsthand, taking notes and gathering information in the field in real-time is essential to storytelling. This is best done by people.

Emotions & Ethics

Journalists add a human touch, infusing stories with emotional depth, guided by ethical judgment and a commitment to truth. Journalists hold power accountable and bring forth investigative insights that only human curiosity, intuition and ethical considerations can achieve.

Yet, we must also acknowledge AI’s benefits. It can support journalism by automating routine tasks and analyzing large datasets. But the irreplaceable core of the profession—deep human understanding, ethical judgment and the ability to connect on a personal level—ensures journalists remain indispensable.
