Brainstorm ideas for writing

Whether you’re writing a blog, a book, a short story or a poem, here are some ways you can brainstorm ideas for writing. While this post is geared more toward creative writing, it can work in any case of writing – even a work email!

  1. Think of your idea in a sentence. This post goes into more on that and will really help you narrow down your thoughts.
  2. Stick with what works for you. While I prefer electronic, you may prefer paper to start with. Go with what works best.
  3. Write down your sentence and then start jotting down words or phrases associated with your main idea.
  4. You may want to turn to research or even Google to get some more ideas flowing if you find yourself paused and need more information.
  5. After you have your main idea and all of your other ideas down, then start to outline. I don’t love to outline personally, so at this stage I would jump into writing. If you find that difficult to do though, start with an outline.
  6. Write as much as you can and then go back and read it. I would recommend editing after you write and not as you write. It may stall your creative process.
  7. Revise, revise, revise.
