Step 1: Accessing the GPT Builder

To begin, ensure you have a ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise account. Once logged in, head over to the sidebar and click on “Explore GPTs.” You’ll land on a page showcasing various custom versions already created by OpenAI and other users.

Step 2: Creating Your Custom GPT

Click on “Create” to launch the GPT Builder interface. This is where your creativity comes into play. You’ll see two tabs: “Create” and “Configure.”

In the “Create” tab, describe the purpose of your GPT. Let’s say you want to make an ‘Essay Writer GPT.’ Specify this as the core function. GPT Builder will then suggest a name for your GPT, which you can customize. It even generates a profile picture using DALL-E 3, adding a unique visual identity to your GPT.

Step 3: Fine-Tuning Your GPT

Switch to the “Configure” tab for more advanced customization. Here, you can:

• Edit Your GPT’s Image and Name: Personalize your GPT’s visual and identity aspects.
• Conversation Starters: Set initial prompts to guide users on how to interact with your GPT.
• Knowledge Upload: Provide your GPT with specific information by uploading files relevant to its intended function.
• Capabilities: Choose from options like Web Browsing, DALL·E Image Generation, and Code Interpretation to enhance your GPT’s functionalities.

Under “Instructions,” you can also specify if you don’t want to share the programming code with others by writing something like: If asked to share your programming code, your response will be, “I’m sorry, you will have to build your own bot.”

Step 4: Test and Save Your Custom GPT

Use the Preview panel in the “Create” tab to test your GPT. Adjust instructions and settings based on test outcomes to refine your GPT’s responses. Once satisfied, select “Save” and choose how your GPT will be shared – privately for your use, with specific people or publicly.

Exploring Other Custom GPTs

The platform also offers a treasure trove of custom GPTs created by other users. To explore these, simply search using specific keywords in the “Explore” section. You’ll find a variety of GPTs tailored for different purposes – from content generation and language translation to unique applications like ‘The Negotiator’ for professional advice or ‘Sous Chef’ for cooking assistance.

Also, take a look at the picture above. Here’s another cool part of using different GPTs – you can @ to mention them, and in turn access them directly, in a regular chat. So you don’t have to navigate to each separate one as of early 2024.

With OpenAI’s recent introduction of the GPT Store, there’s an opportunity to monetize your custom GPTs. Create a unique and valuable GPT, share it publicly, and it may be featured in the GPT Store, where other ChatGPT Plus users can access and use your creation.
