
Learning a new language for free is easier than ever with technology! One app I love to use is Duolingo. Here’s how it works.
First, download the app and then choose a language.

You can see I have three languages I’ve been working on:

Each language has a different set of levels divided by basics, phrases, food, plurals, animals, clothing, questions, colors and more.
The lessons are broken down into segments so you get multiple opportunities to workshop the language. In this example, the app is asking me to write the translation:

In this example, Duolingo asks me what I hear:

Here, it wants me to translate from English to Italian:

You can also have Duolingo set alerts to remind you to practice. If you sign in through Facebook, you can connect with others too.

While Duolingo is great for brushing up your skills, growing your vocab and learning the basics for travel, I am not sure I’d go so far as to say it’s great to become fluent or advanced.
If I hadn’t taken language classes in the past I’d be a little confused using the app in terms of verb conjugation and things like that. But it is a fun, easy and free way to prep for your next trip!
