If you’ve heard of AI, chances are high you’ve also heard the term prompt engineering. In this post, we’ll break down what prompt engineering is, how to craft different types of prompts, and share practical, creative examples.
What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt engineering is the art of crafting precise questions or statements to guide an AI’s responses effectively. Think of it as steering a conversation to get the most useful, accurate or creative response. The better your prompt, the better your output.

Types of Prompts
- Informational Prompts: Ideal when you need factual information.
- 🔍 Example: “Explain the process of photosynthesis.” The AI responds with a detailed explanation, helpful for science class or content research.
- Creative Prompts: Unleash imagination.
- ✍️ Example: “Write a short story about a time-traveling historian.” You’ll get an engaging narrative – good for brainstorming creative writing projects.
- Instructional Prompts: Best for step-by-step guidance.
- 📚 Example: “How do I solve a quadratic equation?” Expect a clear, educational breakdown of mathematical concepts.
- Opinion-based Prompts: Useful for generating viewpoints.
- 💬 Example: “What are the pros and cons of online learning?” This helps gather diverse perspectives for discussions or debates.

key tips
- Assign a Role: Define a role to guide the tone, style and expertise of the response.
- Example: “You are a climate scientist with 20+ years in the field who is an expert in carbon capture.”
- Set Clear Context: Give it some background.
- Example: “I’m teaching a class for the first time on climate change and need help writing material for my class and students.”
- Be Specific: Provide clear and detailed instructions to get precise results.
- Example: “Write a succinct (50 words or less) explanation of what carbon capture is for a group of undergrad students.”
- Define Tone and Style: Specify the tone or writing style.
- Example: “Use a professional but friendly and engaging tone.”
- Ask for Structure: If you need structured content (e.g., bullet point lists, outlines, tabular format), include that in the prompt.
- Example: “Give me 3 options in tabular format.”
- Refine: If the initial output isn’t perfect, ask for adjustments.
- Example: “That’s good, but make it more formal and concise.”
- Use Step-by-Step Prompts: Break down complex requests into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Example prompt 1: “First, list 3 options.”
- Example prompt 2: “Now expand on each one with examples.”
- For example, don’t ask it to write a whole book at once—break it down in steps: start with an idea, then move to characters, plot, chapters, etc.
- Provide Examples: If you have a particular style in mind, give an example for the AI to follow.
- Example: “Write this in the same style as this: [insert example].”
Here’s how this prompt would initially look:
You are a climate scientist with 20+ years in the field who is an expert in carbon capture. I’m teaching a class for the first time on climate change and need help writing material for my class and students. Write a succinct (50 words or less) explanation of what carbon capture is for a group of undergrads. Use a professional but friendly and engaging tone. Give me 3 options in tabular format.
Of course, not every prompt has to be this detailed. It depends on the level of output expected.
Maximizing Prompt Effectiveness
- Use GPTs: You can also use resources like Prompt Perfect, a GPT on ChatGPT.
- Use Follow-up Questions: Dive deeper by asking for clarifications or expanded explanations. This works well for learning and content creation.
- Experiment: Try different phrasings and angles to discover what works best. This is especially useful when tackling complex topics.
