Approach your blog like a business

If you want to get into blogging, then get ready to take it seriously. It’s a lot of work and it can be time-consuming. Here is how to get started with a plan so you don’t waste time and get the results you’re looking for! Learn how to blog like it’s a business.

I’m categorizing this post under ‘career’ because I’m treating blogging like a career, or part of a career. You may want to use a blog to build your business or expand on your brand. I’m a journalist, so for me, this blog has a number of purposes. It builds my brand, builds my audience, inspires me to create content outside of my day job and encourages me to stay up-to-date on the latest tech – another big plus as a journalist today.

Before you even start to blog, first, get ready to spend a lot of time building your blog. I can’t even count how many hours it took me. I got the domain name through GoDaddy, and then started building the blog on WordPress. I didn’t love the templates there so I researched until I found one I liked elsewhere.

Next, I had to install the template to WordPress and figure out how to actually use it! If you aren’t familiar with building blogs you may want to get a book or invest in a class – depending on what site you use to build it. I like the flexibility of WordPress. I taught myself WordPress but I have used it for years at this point.

After you build the blog you’ll then start creating your content! I wrote a few posts before realizing I needed a game plan.

MY PLAN:

– Write a certain amount of posts each week
– Share my posts to social media a certain number of days each week
– Create and upload videos about my blog posts to my YouTube a few times a month
– Send out newsletters each month
– Do social media marketing each month (an example of this is creating a short social media post to explain what my blog is about and asking people to subscribe)

It takes a lot of effort to build a blog, set a plan and continue to create – but if you want to be a blogger this is the best path to take. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
