A good picture is all about the lighting. You can really make or break an image with how it’s lit, not just for photos but for videos too. So remember: lighting, lighting, lighting! It’s important. That’s why a ring light can be a big help. P.S. This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information.
I like to use multi-light setups when I can, but a ring light is a great way to get solid lighting while minimizing shadows if you’re shooting a simple portrait.
Ring lights are able to cast a full circle of light. Since the center is cut out, you can take the photo through its center. It is a diffused, or soft, lighting which is quite flattering for close-ups of the face, getting rid of shadows and evenly distributing the light.
Some come with color filters that you can use to match to inside light (tungsten) or outside light (daylight). The effect of the ring light illuminates the eyes, and offers a flattering cover of light on the subject – and, it’s pretty easy to setup.
You can get large or small ring lights, but just make sure the one you pick is stable and has a stand to connect to it and to hold a phone or camera, depending on what type of device you want to use to take photos or videos.
