Love to read? So do we! Libby makes it easy to read books for free. Yes, free! Here’s how to install and use the app. P.S. This page may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information.
Libby works by accessing libraries. First, you’ll need to tell Libby if you have a library card or not. If you don’t have one, you can try to sign up online.

Once you connect your card or get a new card, you can start browsing books.

You can read books on Kindle or Libby.
According to the site, to check out a book:
On your Shelf, tap loans at the top of the screen. From there, you can:
- Tap Read With… to choose where you’d like to read the book (Kindle or Libby), then finish sending to Kindle (U.S. libraries only) or start reading in Libby.
- Tap Open In Libby, Open Magazine, or Open Audiobook to start reading or listening in the app.
- Tap Manage Loan to see options like Renew and Return.
If you’re the type of person who likes an old-fashioned book in their hands (we feel you), then check out this site called ThriftBooks. It’s a great place to look for affordable, used books that are in good condition. I’ve gotten a few books on ThriftBooks and have never been disappointed.
