When I first started using an Oculus I was surprised by the world of virtual reality. It was more fun than I expected (and at times scarier too!). Here are some takeaways from using the Oculus and playing in the virtual reality realm. P.S. This page may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information.
But first, what is an Oculus? It’s a virtual reality (VR) headset owned by Meta. You don’t need a gaming system to use it. It’s fully functional on its own and comes with two remote controls that pair to the headset.
Know your boundaries
One of the most important things is safety! It may sound obvious, but finding a safe space to play is key. Look for a large area without any sharp edges you can fall into. The Oculus will ask you to draw a zone for yourself to play inside of and it will warn you when you leave the zone. But trust me, no matter how much space you think you have, account for more. You will most likely go outside of the space you create for yourself.

I am terrified of sharks. And, of course, there are shark games and interactive videos offered on the Oculus. That’s right, it’s not just games, you can explore and travel the world through videos on the platform too. If you have any concerns with content then be aware of that going in. You don’t want to experience something that scares you and panic, or throw off and break your headset. Also, be careful if you think you might experience getting dizzy and falling while using the device. Go in with a plan if you need to stop using it.

Do your research
It is easy to spend money! Some things are offered free, but others you have to pay for (and usually those are the best games). I spent some time researching what I wanted to purchase in advance, which I’m happy I did because I could’ve gone over my budget. And some games look more fun than their reviews online.

We wound up purchasing a few other items, including a travel case to keep the system safe while on the go. You can also get an elite strap for extra support and comfort. Shope more items here.

My husband and I also tried virtual reality with Sandbox VR. It was in a large room and they equipped us with body gear and fake guns. The experience was more advanced than the Oculus in that you’re completely immersed and the walls and floors look like they’re moving around you. It was fun, but again, know your limits going into something that can feel quite real!
