When I visited New York City in 2021, I was delighted to find I could simply tap my iPhone on a screen to enter the subway! It’s called “tap and go.”
No more lining up to buy metro tickets. No more scrambling for coins and cash in my bag to cough up the cost of the fare.
It’s a simple process. You just need to make sure your Apple Wallet has an updated credit card. Then you tap your phone to get in (the phone’s screen can be locked), like this:
OMNY is the contactless payment platform. The American Public Transportation Association site states: “As the MTA rolls out OMNY between 2019 and 2023, you can still use MetroCard and eTix. You can choose when OMNY is right for you.”

The site also states: “An OMNY user pays the same fare as someone using a value-based MetroCard). OMNY’s backend also recognizes a transfer (e.g., a boarding tap on a bus within two hours of a tap from entering the subway) and does not charge the passenger another fare.”
When I lived in NYC, I always paid for a month-long metro card because it made it more affordable. Reduced fares aren’t offered as of now with OMNY, but keep an eye on the site for more.

Sounds like this could be the future of public transportation going forward. And the best part – you don’t need to sign up or download an app. You literally just tap and go.
