
Ever feel completely overwhelmed by advertisements online? Sometimes you just want to turn them off, and with ad blockers you often can. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to using an ad blocker online.
Ad blockers are software which removes or alters online advertising in your web browser, often by using extensions. So how do you go about finding and using them?

First, you need to find an ad blocker. Try Googling ‘ad blocker’ to see what you think could work for you and your computer. I use Chrome as my main browser, so I installed AdBlock onto my Chrome browser as an extension.

After I installed it, it appeared in the top right corner on Chrome:

Now, one very important thing to keep in mind is that while these help – they can also cause issues for some websites. You may come across sites that recognize you’re using ad blockers and ask you to turn off your ad blockers if you want to access the site. They’ll put up a wall so you won’t be able to access the site if you don’t turn them off.

To counter this, you can access the ad blocker in your browser and select one of the options to disable it, such as “Pause on this site” or “Don’t run on this page.” Or you can open up an incognito window in your browser and look at the website that way. In Chrome, you can find the incognito window in your main menu: File — New Incognito Window. This is a private browsing window where your ad blockers won’t run.
