I’m social, but where’s my social following?

MEDIA

I'm a social person, but where’s my social following

Being social online takes different skills than being social in person. You may find yourself to be gregarious in person, but lacking social skills when it comes to a digital audience. Here are some tips if you’re trying to build your online platforms and want to improve your social following.

Pay attention to analytics and metrics

Following what performs well and what doesn’t is key to any business or brand. The same goes for social media or online platforms. Take some time to build your brand and your voice. As you post, pay attention to the analytics and metrics. Some sites have those options available on the backend. Look at the numbers there as well as the numbers on the audience-facing end. Keep tabs over time to measure how your audience is responding.

Write in an authentic way

One of my favorite tips for writing authentically is speaking aloud. First, I write. Then I say it aloud. If it sounds weird it most likely is weird! Another tip is to write like you’re talking to your best friend. Don’t write for an audience that doesn’t exist – write for an audience you define and an audience you know well! If you keep that in mind it will help you along the way.

Connect with others

This takes a lot of time and effort. But remember, being on social media is all about – being social! So you’re posting for an audience, yes, but you should also be forming connections. Reply to comments and messages if you have time. Like other people’s posts. Connect! It will help you grow your audience in return.

Read and research

Before I started my blog I not only read research about blogging, but I also read other blogs! This concept can be applied to anything. If you’re trying to grow your Instagram then follow and research Instagram accounts you like. If you want to get more YouTube views, watch a lot of YouTube videos! Trust me, it pays off.

Experiment

Ultimately, you need to not be afraid. This means posting something you think may fail. As long as it follows your brand, then try to get creative. Do something different! Maybe it won’t work but then again maybe it will. I almost didn’t post this video of my brother giving a speech at my wedding, but it was my first YouTube video to hit more than a million views!! So experiment, create and grow.
